In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, music from the late "gentleman of the blues" Detroit bluesman Johnnie Bassett, who died on August 4th at age 76. Bassett backed many well-known artists on their Detroit shows, including Big Joe Turner, and was a member of the house band for the Detroit label Fortune Records, but it was really in the 1990s and after, when he started releasing his own albums, that the full extent of his talent became known. Drawing on jazz and soul, and offering a good dose of humor and fun, Bassett was a class act, a teller of timeless stories, and a well-loved player in and around Detroit as well as overseas. We'll hear several songs from Mr. Bassett, and a song from another bluesman who passed away recently Michael Burks, from his posthumous album "Show Of Strenth." We'll also spin a couple of songs from the new album Unfolding by young trombonist and singer Natalie Cressman - - that and more, in this hour of The Blues & Beyond.
