In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, I'll feature tracks from two long out of print albums by the late great Johnny Heartsman, the cassette-only, live album "Shine On" and the 1984 LP "Music Of My Heart." This album is not to be confused with another album called "Music Of My Heart" that he did in the 1970s as "John Heartsman and Circles" which became a ridiculoulsy hot collector's item fetching thousands of dollars on rare record markets. That "Music Of My Heart" is now out on CD, but the one featured on this show is not. Heartsman, who died in 1996 at age 59, gave us some soulful blues and also had a great sense of humor; he played guitar, organ, bass, and flute, and I keep hoping that both of these albums, "Shine On" and "Music Of My Heart," will be reissued on CD someday. We'll also hear a couple of selections from cornetist Josh Berman, a new album called "There Now," and the album "Gather" from Fred Lonberg-Holm's Fast Citizens, a band that includes Josh Berman - - two good new ones from Chicago's Delmark label. Plus, just 20 years old and already owner of an impressive jazz résumé, trombonist Natalie Cressman and her band Secret Garden have a fine new release. We'll hear a track from it on this show.
