COMPASSIONATE BASTARD: Aspiring singer-songwriter Peter Mitchell thought life was going to be easy when he signed up for a job in the public service. But on his first day he was asked to tackle illegal immigrants trying to escape. Though it wasn’t what he signed up for, he realized he had a knack for the job, and soon became manager of Australia’s most notorious immigration detention centre, Villawood. And part of the job included preventing a group of detainees from slitting their own throats...

After his time managing Villawood, Peter Mitchell was assigned to run Operation Safe Haven, a temporary asylum for Kosovan refugees. At a concert staged for the refugees, Peter played a song he’d written for them, and it changed the course of his life.
