Infamous Boston Irish mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger and his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, spent 15 years hiding out as retired couple "Charlie and Carol Gasko" on a quiet block in Santa Monica. The discovery of the Gaskos, in an apartment crammed with cash and guns, made headlines around the world and turned the block into a media circus. Writer Gideon Brower, who lived across the street from the Gaskos, talks to residents of their apartment building about the couple, the arrests, and why America's most notorious fugitives were actually pretty good neighbors. Intro and Outro

INTRO:

Today marks one year since FBI agents swooped down on a quiet block of 3rd Street in Santa Monica, ending 16 years of life on the lam for Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger [[BUHL-JER]] and his lady friend, Catherine Greig [[GREG]]. They’d lived there since taking it on the lam back in 1995. Writer Gideon Brower happens to live across the street from the apartment where they passed as retirees Charlie and Carol Gasko. After the arrest, Gideon talked with any neighbor who would talk to him on tape about Charlie and Carol, the couple who turned out to be Whitey Bulger and Catherine Greig.

OUTRO:

That’s Janus Goodwin, neighbor of Whitey Bulger during his years on the lam in Santa Monica. She’s also the neighbor of writer Gideon Brower, who produced this piece. This piece is a production of KCRW’s Independent Producer Project.
