NOWHERE ELSE TO GO part 1

THE WORD "KAKUMA" MEANS "NOWHERE" IN SWAHILI, AND WHILE THE NEARLY 90,000 INHABITANTS OF KAKUMA REFUGEE CAMP IN KENYA HAIL FROM MANY COUNTRIES AND HAVE UNIQUE STORIES, THEY EACH ARRIVED AT KAKUMA WHEN THEY SAW NOWHERE ELSE TO GO. FOR MANY REFUGEES AND DISPLACED PERSONS IN EAST AFRICA, KAKUMA, LIKE A SMALL CITY, REPRESENTS OPPORTUNITY, SAFETY, HELP, AND A PLACE TO CALL HOME. ASTONISHINGLY, KAKUKA JUST “CELEBRATED” ITS 20TH YEAR IN OPERATION; AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE AND HUMAN CONFLICT ARE ONLY MAKING THE CHALLENGES OF OPERATING IN THIS CORNER OF EAST AFRICA MORE COMPLEX.

NOWHERE ELSE TO GO part 2

FOR 20 YEARS RUNNING, MANY DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS, RELIEF WORKERS, MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, AND CLERGY HAVE GIVEN THEIR TIME AND ENERGY TO ASSISTING THOSE BOTH IN, AND OUTSIDE THE CAMP, TO LIVE THEIR LIVES WITH GREATER DIGNITY AND RESPECT.  TODAY WE ARE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO VISIT WITH SALESIAN FATHER LUKE MULAYINKAL, DIRECTOR OF THE DON BOSCO VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTER INSIDE KAKUMA REFUGEE CAMP. FR. LUKE HAS SERVED AT KAKUMA FOR 4 YEARS AND HE TOURED US THROUGH KAKUMA AND SHARED WITH US HIS INSIGHT AND PERSPECTIVE LEARNED FROM HIS EXPERIENCE.  STAY TUNED AS WE'RE OFF TO KENYA TO LEARN MORE ABOUT RECENT DEVELOPMENTS INSIDE ONE OF AFRICA’S THE OLDEST REFUGEE CAMPS.
