“Ever Green” was a musical production featuriing the works of Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart, the legendary songwriting team. It was not a “Broadway smash”.... In fact it didn’t even open on Broadway, being one of three musicals the team wrote in London, for a London production. It premiered in December of 1930 and starred Jessie Matthews. Although virtually unknown in the United States, Matthews went on to become one of Britain’s biggest movie stars, and the 1934 filmed version of “Ever Green” like the stage version, was a smash hit. One of the songs from the production became extremely popular, and something of a theme song for Matthews, associated with her throughout her career, and though she and the production were never to become American favorites, the song became a standard in the United States. Most people who listened to Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Jeri Southern, or any of the others who performed or recorded this beautiful song over the years, had no idea of the song’s British history. Here’s “Dancing On The Ceiling”.....
