Jazz Odyssey #267 - Esperanza Spalding - Hour 2
From: Chris Kuborn
Series: Jazz Odyssey
Length: 59:01
Somtimes an artist comes around that transcends a genre or style of music. They overlap into many "categories" and are successful with many audiences. This is generally not a bad thing - great for the artist of course and great for us - as we might hear music that we may not normally tune into. Esperanza Spalding is a fabulous singer, composer and bass player. She is surely a Modern Jazz artist but you will hear some of her work on pop stations or smooth Jazz formats. Don't be fooled that her music is sweet, accessible and melodic - there is a whole layer of complexity to her tunes - I think you will hear that - I think that will draw you in to listen to more. I enjoy what she does, how she plays and the way she winds melodies around complex rythms and harmonies. This IS Modern Jazz - the others that aren't so complex and developed can only sit back and be envious. I think this one you will Enjoy!!
