For those of us who will not be around 105 years from now, this is our last chance to see the planet Venus pass between earth and the sun. The astronomical phenomenon occurs on a repeating pattern every 243 years. When it does occur, it happens in pairs in relatively quick succession - the last transit of Venus was in 2004. The event begins at 6pm and will last through sunset. Several local state parks, including Lake Monroe’s Paynetown and the Brown County State park, are sponsoring activities and safe viewing opportunities, and the Indiana University school of astronomy is sponsoring a viewing on top of the Henderson Parking Garage on campus. Today, WFHB correspondent Jennifer Whitaker speaks with Caty Pilachowski, professor of Astronomy at Indiana University, who explains the science behind tonight’s synchronicity, for a WFHB feature exclusive.
