Nesf-norfolk_cmf-litchfield_ct-festival_photo_small Featuring 70 acres of rolling lawns, glorious gardens and historic buildings, the Ellen Battell Stoeckel estate in Litchfield, CT is also the home of the annual Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. The strong tradition of music in that area dates back more than a century, originating in 1899 in the 35-room mansion of pianist Ellen Battell Stoeckel and her husband Carl (the son of Yale's first Professor of Music). In 1906 the Festival moved to its new home, the concert hall called "the Music Shed" - a.k.a "the big red barn" - designed by New York City architect E.K. Rossiter.
