Becoming Visible A few years ago, Gloria Troyer suffered an attack of encephalitis which left her with brain damage. Though it impaired how she functioned, to others, it was an invisible handicap. That changes when she goes out in public with a cane. The cane helps keep her balance. But Gloria has mixed feelings about signalling her disability.
