JULIA KENNEDY: Welcome to Just Business. I'm Julia Taylor Kennedy.
Many see global health as the domain of nonprofits and international organizations. But today on the show, we'll look at two ways that global health is a growing concern for big businesses and bottom lines.
Beverage and snack food behemoth PepsiCo seems an unlikely candidate to fight obesity and related diseases, since its products have such high sugar and salt content. But when PepsiCo's controversial CEO Indra Nooyi took charge in 2008, she put health front and center, arguing PepsiCo should improve the healthfulness of its current products and develop new healthy snacks and beverages. This approach has angered some shareholders, and growth in PepsiCo's profits has slowed under Nooyi. But so far the company has stuck to its long-term strategy, arguing the investment in health will eventually pay off.
