For many composers, the piano is where they first hear their musical thoughts. It’s no wonder then that so many are pianists first. This week we’ll be hearing music by pianist-composers for their instrument.
Coming up, William Bolcom takes us back to an earlier age with a set of “Ghost Rags” written in memory of his father. Ned Rorem’s first piano sonata recalls the music of Aaron Copland and a time in the mid-20th century when every composer tried their hand in that genre.
And we’ll hear the piano in its role as chamber musician in Marc Neikrug’s Piano Quintet with a performance by the Orion String Quartet joined by the composer at the piano.
