Detentionkahnweb_small Joseph Kahn's first feature film, TORQUE, has attained cult status after a disasterous reception by critics. The experience did two things to Kahn. One, he met DETENTION's co-writer, Mark Palermo, one of the few film critics who had given TORQUE a good review, and, two, he decided that his next film would be one over which he had complete artistic control. Even if it meant putting up his own money to make it. We covered that during our conversation on April 12, 2012, as well as how his successful career as a maker of music videos and commericals had helped him shape DETENTION's dense structure. The film resembles similar horror spoofs in only the most superficial of ways, and Kahn's explanation of the differences are a tidy precis on filmmaking. The chat is full of good humor, smart insight, and a perceptive understanding of the appeal of being a vegetarian has for teenage girls. It's also eye-opening when it comes to how a fiercely independent filmmaker such as Kahn subsumes his vision when working with a music superstar.

Intro and Outro

INTRO:

Andrea Chase takes you Behind the Scenes of DETENTION with director and co-writer Joseph Kahn. DETENTION is a loving and incisive tribute to almost every horror film about kids in high school ever. In it, the requisite motley crew of kids at Grizzly Lake High School must contend with bitchy cliques, star-crossed romances, and a fictional serial killer named Cinderhella who has sprung mysteriously to life just as UFOs have started mysteriously appearing over the local IHOP. Oh, and the prom is coming up, putting pressure on people to find the right date if they can just make it out of detention alive. The film stars Josh Hutcherson as the skateboarding underachiever, Dane Cook as the school principal with a secret past, Shanley Caswell as the school’s second biggest loser of all time, Spencer Locke as her once and future best friend convinced that 1992 was the coolest year ever, Aaron David Johnson as the requisite best friend with secret longings, Parker Badgely as the requisite jock with anger issues, James Black as the frighteningly gung-ho coach, and Ron Jeremy as the beautiful beast. Kahn directed from a script he co-wrote with Canadian Mark Palermo.

Kahn was born in Texas, lived in Italy for a while before returning to the Lone Star State. He began his insanely successful career making music videos while still in high school and continue that career when he moved to New York, dropping out of film school after only one year. He has worked with Britney, U2, The Black-Eyed Peas, Moby, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, and the Back Street Boys, among others. He has directed commercials for Burger King, Playstation, Addidas, Budweiser, and Old Navy. His first film, TORQUE, has attained cult status.
