FAMINE IN THE HORN OF AFRICA part 1 For people living in "the Horn of Africa", Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia, 2011 was the driest year since 1950. And this greatest drought in 60 years has also spawned the most dire famine in as many years as well. No rain has meant no food and that has sent torrents of the starving into refugee camps in Kenya. The Voices team traveled to Kenya recently to report on this ongoing disaster. Today we talk with Robert Anthony Woods who is working in the epicenter of famine relief. Tony is the Chancellor of the diocese of Lodwar, a town in Turkana County, an area quickly becoming a desert.
FAMINE IN THE HORN OF AFRICA part 2 This crisis will not be going away any time soon. Most climate models predict that sub-Saharan Africa's arid regions will expand by up to 350,000 square miles within the next 2 decades. The Turkana tribe will have less and less arable land, less pastureland for grazing their animals and less food security. We talk with the Catholic Bishop of the diocese, native Kenyan Dominic Kimengich and we return to our conversation with the Irish-born Chancellor overseeing the incoming famine-aid, Tony Woods.
