AUDIO INFO:
Casino Suite (1997) Wind quintet and tape-
Record Notes by Phillip Kent Bimstein: The music on the tape is composed entirely from the deconstructed sounds of gambling: slot machines, roulette wheels, dice, poker chips, coins, cards, the big wheel, etc. The voice on the tape belongs to Tom Martinet, who was trained to be a priest but has worked the Las Vegas dice tables since 1974. Bimstein interviewed Mr. Martinet in Moapa, Nevada, and then reassembled his words into the text of the work. Commissioned for Sierra Winds by a 1995 NEA New Forms grant with additional support from Nevada State Council on the Arts and Meet The Composer's New Residencies. 1997 premiere in Las Vegas by Sierra Winds.
*Las Vegas-
The Night of the Living Gamblers. Up all night, in and out of the casinos, talking to the folk trying their luck.
A Man In A Room, Gambling-
Record Notes by Gavin Bryars: The Spanish artist Juan Mu?oz wrote 10 texts, each one describing the manipulation of playing cards - dealing from the bottom of the pack, avoiding failure in the Three-Card Trick, how to palm a card and so on. Some of this material was culled from the writings of the extraordinary Canadian S. W. Erdnase and especially his book The Expert at the Card Table.
*Bass Keno-
Jazz bass player (David Murray Quartet) recounts his addiction to keno machines, the depths of his descent and his long climb back. (His words are backed by his improvised bass.) Aired on NPR All Things Considered in August 2000.
