Burying White Spaces Under a Ton of Legislation
Do you remember when TV broadcasters switched from analog to digital programming? This shift was supposed to give us a windfall of Super Wi-Fi from airwaves TV broadcasters no longer need. Wi-Fi comes to us courtesy of unlicensed spectrum – the part of our public airwaves not designated for licensed wireless uses like radio, TV and mobile phones.
Michael Weinberg is a staff attorney for Public Knowledge.
Michael Weinberg: Everything that happens on Wi-Fi right now happens on spectrum that is not very good at transmitting information. TV spectrum is really good at transmitting information, so you can get spectrum that can transmit a lot more information a lot farther.
