Jill Deorfler grew up on the White Earth reservation in western Minnesota. After she graduated from the University of Minnesota- Morris with distinction, she preceded to get her doctorate from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. She uses literature and historical documentation to aid her research, for which she recently won the 2010 Beatrice Medicine Award for Scholarship in Native American Studies.
