Free jazz has always been one of the hardest styles of Jazz for most to not only understand but surely to enjoy. When you loose track of melody, harmony and sometimes rhythm there is not much left to hang on to. Add to this simultaneous improvisation and many just can keep up with all that is going on in the music. That being said, it is a force in Jazz that can not be dismissed - nor should it. Without Ornette Coleman many modern Jazz musicians may have followed in the footsteps of more, shall we say, "pop jazz" soloists, and we need no more of those. Thank goodness for exploration, for development for innovation - it has opened the doors and minds to many. So as hard as this may seem, sit down, relax, get your thinking cap on and get ready for some serious mind expansion - along the way remember to Enjoy!!
