The recipe starts with a fairly obscure film from 1966, Add a composer-guitarist of near legendary stature, and a little-known American lyricist. Put them all together with a setting for “song – well-done…” And the resulting bossa-classic “Gentle Rain” is the result. The title song from the film directed by Burt Balaban , starring Lynda Day George, “Gentle Rain” is a beautiful latter day standard with a touching American lyric, that goes straight to the heart. Lyricist Matt Dubay’s biggest previous success was “Mutual Admiration Society”, a song from a forgotten musical called “Happy Hunting”, that nonetheless achieved hit status thanks to Theresa Brewer’s recording, and a million and one versions on 1950s TV variety shows. Along with Louis Bonfa’s classic melody, Dubay’s English lyric adds up to the perfect recipe for tender, reflective romance… Serving it up just right, here’s Minnesota’s Voice Debbie Duncan….
