Though she is not well-remembered today, Marilyn Miller was one of the greatest stars of the 19-teens, 20s, & early 30s. Her home was Broadway, and she was one of the legendary performers closely associated with the mighty Florenz Zeigfeld. She usually played optimistic, rags-to-riches Pollyanna-types, although her personal life was anything but problem-free…. One of her most successful and most typical roles was as the title character in Zeigfeld’s production “Sally”. The show’s big hit song was composed by Jerome Kern, already one of the most successful composers in American theater. Lyrics were by a young man who would, in addition to continuing his songwriting success, go on to become a motion picture executive and one of the founding partners of Capitol Records, more than 20 years later: Buddy DeSylva. Together, they wrote one of Miller’s most beautifully optimistic songs, “Look For The Silver Lining”, Performed for us by “optimistic” Minnesota Voice, Maud Hixson….
