Journeyman years.
There are many expressions in our language that we take for granted, having no idea of their origin or meaning. On Thursday evening our son phoned to say he had met two young men and was bringing them home. A couple of hours later he walked into the kitchen with Christian and Philip. They stood a little aquwardly with gentle manners holding our stares while wearing broad smiles and their medieval traveling costume. They are German traveling journeymen, and it is from them that we have the phrase a journeyman apprentice
After acquiring a bachelor level carpentry degree Wanderjahe or traveling men take time to travel and practice their craft throughout the world in order to become master craftsmen. Leaving home with five Euros in their pocket they will return no sooner than three years and a day with exactly five Euros again in their pocket. Our son asked...
