It's been a journey of several decades for Glenn Close to bring ALBERT NOBBS to the screen. The actress first played the role of a woman living as a man in Victorian Ireland back in 1982, and she never gave up the idea of turning the play into a movie. When I spoke to Glenn Close on October 7, 2011, I asked her about how she turned the character's virtual silence in the first part of the film into such a moving emotional experience for the audience. Her answer to that, as with the rest of thre interivew, showed great insight and enormous warmth, especially when describing why, when Albert puts on a dress for the first time in many years, it looks wrong. I finished by asking Close to talk about playing one of the most iconic roles in theater, Blanche DuBois, in "A Streetcar Name Desier" at the Royal National Theatre, and about speaking the immortal line about relying on the kindness of strangers.

Intro and Outro
INTRO:Andrea Chase takes you Behind the Scenes of ALBERT NOBBS with star, co-writer, and Phi Beta Kappa Glenn Close. ALBERT NOBBS is a singular tale of deception, determination, and unexpected hope. Close plays Nobbs, a woman living as a man in Victorian Ireland in order to have the sort of security not afforded to women at that time. After decades in trousers, Albert comes perilously close to having her secret revealed, only to discover that she is not as alone as she thought she was.
A typical working day for Close might include a poofy pink dress, Jeremy Irons, and a tiger, or lurking underwater in a bathtub, or gliding down a staircase ready for her closeup from Mr. DeMille. On television she has made an indelible, and emmy-winning mark as Patty Hewes on DAMAGES. After wining an OBIE in 1982 for playing the role on stage, she not only stars as the title character in ALBERT NOBBS, she also co-wrote the screenplay and is one of the producers. film co-stars Mia Wasikowska, Jane McTeer, Johnathan Rhys-Myers, Aaron Johnson, Brendan Gleeson, Pauline Collins and Brenda Fricker. It was directed by Rodrigo Garcia. It is worth noting that this is not Close’s first screen appearance in male drag, she essayed the role of a male pirate in HOOK, sharing the screen with a scorpion.
