An urban fairy-tale:….In 1957, a Youngstown, Ohio housewife by the name of Sadie Vimmerstedt decided to write a note to Mr. Johnny Mercer, the great lyricist, whom she’d never met, suggesting he compose a tune with the lyric that includes the line: “I wanna be around to pick up the pieces when somebody breaks your heart…” Mercer was intrigued with the line, so much so that he composed a melody himself, and created a lyric that centered around Sadie’s concept. Much to Mrs. Vimmerstedt’s surprise and pleasure, she was contacted by Mercer when the song was recorded by Tony Bennett, and informed that she would be forever co-credited with Mercer for the authorship of the song, which became a smashing success, and a goldmine for Mrs. Sadie Vimmerstedt, of Youngstown Ohio. Here’s Ms. Maud Hixson, of St. Paul, MN, to sing it…..
