ONE OF THE MOST LAVISH MUSICAL FILMS OF THE 1940S WAS JOE PASTERNAK’S elaborate MGM production, “Anchors Aweigh”, starring Gene Kelly, Kathryn Grayson, and Frank Sinatra. Like most of Pasternak’s productions at MGM, the film was a stunning wash of Technicolor and gorgeous music. Gene Kelly danced a number of his most elaborately athletic dances, including one with animated Tom & Jerry star Jerry the Mouse. Kathryn Grayson’s classical pipes were given a workout in several big numbers, and Sinatra even danced some complicated routines with Kelly… pretty good, too. And yet, in the midst of all the color, dash, and romantic adventure, the most memorable moment in this gorgeous film was the one which offered the sight & sound of youthful, love struck Frank Sinatra, just sitting at a piano, singing this eloquent, yet simple tune. Here’s Minnesota’s Voice Maud Hixson with Sammy Cahn & Jule Styne’s “I Fall In Love Too Easily”.
