LORENZ Hart wasn’t particularly fond of the wryly-comic ballad he and Richard Rodgers created for the score of 1940’s “Pal Joey”…. But it became the show’s biggest hit. Key to the song’s charm was a device that Rodgers used effectively: that of contrasting, (in Rodgers’ words), “a flowing, sentimental melody with words that are UNsentimental and self-mocking”.  Thousands of renditions over the years have somewhat blurred the original intent of the song: to illustrate the protagonist’s erotic attraction to the otherwise unappealing title character of the musical “Pal Joey”… But the beauty of the song’s construction is irresistible; hence, the song has come to represent romantic infatuation in all it’s possible forms. Memorable recordings of the song include those by Frank Sinatra and Doris Day; and here, adding another dimension to The Rodgers & Hart classic “Bewitched”, is Minnesota’s Voice, Connie Evingson:
