January 2012
The ground is dry, the meadows and hillsides are still brown, as if covered with an old discarded lace curtain of last summers dead grass. There is little green on the hills or in the valleys. The last good rain was in November and the sun shines as if still in autumn and not the middle of winter. Those of us who have worked a particular land for forty years will swear on any book that the weather patterns are changing. Last weekend we walked the buffs over the RCA headlands where the first of the wild iris’ are already showing off their bright purple tripods. Post parturent cows suckle their calves but there is only scrub grasses to feed both mother and child.
