There is an interesting subgenre of popular songs from shows; those that more than likely would have been big hits, but were ultimately overshadowed by sleepers within the score that stole all the attention. These sleepers, like bratty children who fuss and won’t hush up and go to bed when told, dwarf the potential of the other songs in the score. A classic example of this would be Irving Berlin’s “Be Careful It’s My Heart”, a lovely, fairly well known song that was denied the smash hit status expected, because it was written for the score which also produced “White Christmas”…. Another of these overshadowed sibling-songs would be the gorgeous “All My Tomorrows”, written for the 1959 motion picture “A Hole In The Head” by Sammy Cahn & Jimmy Van Heusen. Had it not been for the film’s smash-hit “High Hopes”, that peculiar ode to ants, rams & rubber trees, perhaps this gentle, poignant ballad, sung for us by Minnesota’s voice Maud Hixson, would have been one of the top songs of the fifties….
