PROLOGUE
There’s a song that Mormon children sing, it goes…well, something like this: [singing] “I am a child of God and He has sent me here, has given me an earthly home with parents kind and dear. Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, help me find the way. Teach me all that I must do to live with Him someday.”
Growing up Mormon, this song was always so comforting to me. It gave me a sense of who I was and what my place was in the world.
It doesn’t do that anymore.
[MUSIC IN: Mum, “I’m 9 Today”]
Singing it now is deeply unsettling. It brings back a flood of unpleasant memories—all the dissonance I’ve felt trying to harmonize my own beliefs with what the church says I should believe, the guilt I’ve felt over losing my faith, the feeling that I don’t belong anywhere anymore.
