It’s our tradition here at Media Minutes to wrap up the year with a countdown of some of the biggest media stories of 2011.

AT&T/T-Mobile Merger: The Public Interest Wins a Big One
We start with a saga that began in March when AT&T made a surprise $39 billion bid for T-Mobile. AT&T began to use its formidable lobbying power in Washington, spending nearly $12 million in the first half of the year. Approval of the merger seemed inevitable, even as consumer groups and media watchdogs weighed in against the deal, predicting lost jobs and higher prices.

As opposition mounted, a series of events dimmed the merger’s once-bright prospects. Nonprofit organizations and civil rights groups that had received money from AT&T were thrashed in the blogosphere and advocacy...
