Robertson_small At the StoryCorps mobile booth in Columbus, Ohio, Joseph Robertson, 86, tells his son-in-law, John Fish, Jr., about killing a young German soldier at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Joseph Robertson joined the National Guard in 1935. During the war, he fought in the 30th Infantry Division. Robertson retired from military service in 1961.

StoryCorps is the oral history project traveling the country, giving friends and family the chance to ask each other about their lives. This Veterans' Day, we have two stories from Americans who've served in war. In our first, 86-year-old Joseph Robertson speaks with his son-in-law, John Fish Jr., at a mobile booth in Columbus, Ohio. Joseph Robertson served in the Army for 26 years. Here, he remembers a young German soldier he killed at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
