Built atop a hill northwest of the Santa Fe Plaza, St Catherine’s Industrial Indian School is the last surviving, intact historic Indian school in New Mexico. Visible from many vantage points in town, the Main Building is believed to be the largest adobe building in the Southwest. More than three stories tall, crowned with stout gables and accented by a spindly bell tower, it was built with funds from wealthy Philadelphia heiress Katherine Drexel in 1887.
St. Catherine’s was the first in a nationwide system of schools for the education of Native American and African American children. Later canonized, Mother Mary Katherine was from a deeply religious family. Her father, an international banker and partner of J.P.
