Back on Oct 11th, Esera Tuaolo presented his talk "America's Favorite Sport: Alone in the Trenches-My Life as a Gay Man in the NFL" at Winona State University.
Though his talk and interview today on "Culture Clique", Tuaolo will share his experiences of what it was like to hide his sexuality from his teammates and from the public during his nine years with the NFL.
Tuaolo is the author of the book, "Alone in the Trenches," his first-person account of the challenges he faced throughout his professional football career, co-written with journalist John Rosengren.
During his nine-year career Tuaolo played for five different teams including the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers. He was the first player to sing the national anthem and then start an NFL game, and the first rookie nose guard to start all sixteen games.
