- Blues & Beyond #284: Tribute to Hubert Sumlin
- From
- WXPN
In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, a look at the life, times, and music of blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin. Sumlin died at age eighty on December 4th, 2011. He is known best for his crucial role in the sound of Howlin' Wolf. Sumlin's distinctive contributions to Wolf's songs are so essential that we can hardly imagine them without Hubert. He has been a well-recognized influence and a true hero to many blues and rock guitarists, including just about all of the British blues players, though he remained throughout his life unassuming and unphased by celebrity, his own or that of others. After Howlin' Wolf died, Hubert struggled to find his place in the music world, and succeeded, making some inspiring recordings, even though too many fans never saw past his role as a Howlin' Wolf band member. We'll celebrate the artistry of this unique blues musician, with a full program devoted to the late great Hubert Sumlin, in this hour of The Blues & Beyond.
