Europe and Great Britain continue to swirl around in the muddy waters of their economic travails. The fishing line of news reels in and out the threat of a complete European melt down. It all seems so very far from the Buenos Aires sunshine, the beauty of a captured spring and the kindness of portinos amidst the joy of watching skilled athletes.
When we said we were going to “watch the polo.” Argentines and ex-pats alike exclaimed “You will love it. Wear a hat.” We did, and we did.
The first writings on the game of polo come from Persia in the 5th century. Used for training elite cavalry units it also quickly became a sport for young nobles as well as soldiers. There is also reference to the queen and her ladies playing King Parviz and his courtiers though I couldn’t find out who won. Polo spread throughout the East and it was not until the English, roaming around again...
