The AFL-CIO has come up with an ambitious six-point plan for healing our very sick economy . . . one of the best plans that have yet been suggested by anyone.

So, let me briefly go over the AFL-CIO's six points.

Point One. Rebuild the school, transportation and energy systems by investing at least 2.2 trillion dollars in restoring crumbling twentieth century infrastructure. And spend another two trillion building a 21st century infrastructure. As the AFL-CIO says, those investments would put millions of people to work while laying the foundation for long-term economic growth and competitiveness.

Point two. Revive U.S. manufacturing and stop exporting good jobs overseas. That would involve, among many other steps, reforming and enforcing tax policies that encourage the off-shoring of manufacturing. Enhance Buy America standards. Increase investment in job training. Oppose free trade...
