Description:

Part One: STOPPING THE BEATING: Every 15 seconds a woman experiences domestic violence, in Brazil as in many other parts of the world. For seven years, Apareceda endured her husband’s beatings. With the help of Ser Mulher, an organization offering emotional and legal support to battered women in Sao Paulo, Brazil, she found the courage to leave. Elinoar Astrinsky speaks with Apareceda and Maryknoll lay missioner Joanne Blaney about the cycle of violence, changes and successes.

OPTIONAL CUTAWAY CUE: “You’re listening to Voices of Our World" at 14:00.

Part Two: SEWING AWAY FROM PROSTITUTION: Although some women choose to become sex workers, most do it out of economic desperation. The Center for the Social Integration for Women in Sao Paulo, Brazil trains women who prostitute to sew, knit, weave and more. Maryknoll lay missioner Joanne Blaney translates for Ana, a former prostitute who has become a successful seamstress.
