ERIC WHITNEY: The engine that drives much of the tourism economy in southwestern Colorado is coming under fire from people concerned about public health. The historic Durango to Silverton narrow gauge train, which uses nineteenth century technology to pull tourists through the San Juan Mountains, has long been a source of consternation from some who live near its roundhouse in Durango. Recent changes in the railroad’s operation designed to reduce pollution apparently haven’t placated the train’s neighbors, as Victor Locke of KSUT, Four Corners Public Radio reports.
