Early in Janell’s pregnancy, she learned her unborn son had a fatal heart defect. Specialists told her she had three choices for her baby: A heart transplant, experimental surgery, or hospice care. In this interview, we hear about some of the issues and feelings that went into making a decision. Having her mom be the executive director of the local hospice facility offered an ironic opportunity for support from her family. Janell also had to weigh the affect of trying to save her third child on the two daughters she already has, as well as the pain and suffering her newborn baby would have to endure. Despite the difficult situation, Janell and her family find meaning in her son’s life and death.
