Changing Gears reporters spent a week on the road, traveling to places throughout the Midwest where local economies and town cultures revolve around single employers. These big employers used to loom large in everyone’s daily lives. But what do the company towns look like today? We started our trip in Kohler, Wisconsin and completed our trip in Orrville, Ohio. Changing Gears explores the economic transformation of the industrial Midwest, through the stories of people driving and experiencing this change. Read the full description.

1 – Midwest Road Trip: Kohler, Wisconsin

 Changing Gears reporters traveled to places throughout the Midwest where local economies and town cultures revolve around single employers. These big employers used to loom large in everyone’s daily lives. But what do the company towns look like today? We begin our trip in Kohler, Wisconsin with reporter Niala Boodhoo. (8:28)

2 - Midwest Road Trip: Decatur, Illinois

Our Changing Gears team hit the road and visited Midwestern company towns. Yesterday we were in Kohler, Wisconsin. Today, reporter Niala Boodhoo has made it to Decatur, Illinois. (4:18)

3 - Midwest Road Trip: Ishpeming, Michigan

Our Changing Gears project is on the road, bringing you stories of towns where one company still affects everybody’s lives. Yesterday we visited Decatur, Illinois. Today, reporter Kate Davidson takes us north, to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. That’s where North America’s biggest supplier of iron ore has been blasting the earth, and creating jobs, for more than 160 years. (3:43)

4 - Midwest Road Trip: Norwalk, Ohio

Our Changing Gears team is on the road this week. Today, Dan Bobkoff takes us to Norwalk, Ohio, a company town that almost lost its company. That is until the townspeople themselves saved it. (3:59)
