One of the most popular Mexican holidays is the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th. After appearing in a vision in 1531, she's been revered as the Queen of Mexico. A traditional practice in Mexico City is to run messenger torches in her honor out to surrounding parishes. In 2001, New York's catholic leader Cardinal Egan challenged his Mexican congregants to bring a torch all the way across the border. The next year they did it.
Now the 3,000 mile relay run is an annual tradition. This sound-rich montage captures the thoughts of the runners, organizers and bystanders along the route of the first run. It incorporates music and chanting from the torch's ultimate arrival in New York City.
THIS PIECE WOULD BE IDEAL TO RUN ON LOCAL STATIONS AHEAD OF THE TORCH'S ARRIVAL IN TOWNS THROUGHOUT THE SOUTH AND MID-ATLANTIC.
This year the Guadalupe Torch Race has already started its trip from Mexico to New York. It will pass through 9 Mexican states and 13 in the US. The torch will go through Texas (11/4-11/13), Louisiana (11/14-17), Mississippi (11/18-21), Alabama (11/21-23), Georgia (11/24-26) , South Carolina (11/27) & North Carolina (11/28-12/2). In December, it will go through VA, DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, NJ and NY. For exact cities and times for most appropriate airing, follow the weblink above.
In the organizer's words: "The Race has been held four years now and has a goal: the integration and recognition of the mexican immigrants population in the United States, as well has a message of unity and hope for those whom decided to leave their homeland to pursue a dream"

Review of Carrying a torch for the Lady... of Guadalupe
This small piece carries emotional heft for any Mexican immigrant or Mexican-American who identifies with La Virgin de Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Americas, in the Roman Catholic Church. With a nice and varied blend of voices, the producer captures the sound of people’s devotion to The Lady of Guadalupe and the sense of protection they gain under her spiritual shield. The fact that there is a torch relay from the Basilica in Mexico City all the way to New York tells us how important carrying her flame is. It is as important as being Mexican. The mariachi music at the end with the impassioned “Viva Mexico” says it all. This little gem is worth running between now and December.
