Just 50 miles from the coast of Florida in the Bahamas is the tiny island of Bimini. Home of the fabled fountain of youth, it was once known for it’s rum-running during American prohibition. Now Bimini is a tourist destination, a popular spot for fishing and diving. One local islander, a boat-builder and fishing guide took many notable folks out on the water through the years, including Dr. King. [Ansel]...Great great grandfather, father, they all the boat builders, I’m in the 5th generation here. I’m Ansel Saunders that’s my name, Saunders came from Scotland it’s an old English name. three brothers, white men of course, stopped here and married into the natives on this island and that’s how we become the Saunders. S a u n d e r s.
People always ask me about Hemmingway. I only know Hemmingway because he lived next door to where we lived and he had two boys of my age, that was way back in the 1930s. I’ve met great people because of fishing, I met Joe Namath, I met the queen twice, but not because of fishing, I met Margaret thatcher twice, the topic was free, sanctions against South Africa, free Mandela. I helped free Mandela, that’s a long story we won’t get into.
