Walter Harper died today, October 25th, 1918.
His too-short life story reads like an adventure novel.
Walter Harper was born in Alaska … to a Scots father and native … Athabascan … mother. His seven siblings … were sent “to the States” to private school … but Harper was raised by his mother at home. Schooled as they say, to shoot straight, speak the truth, and make due with little food and less sleep. At all this, he excelled.
Sent to St. Marks’ Mission school in Nenana … age sixteen … Harper met Hudson Stuck … Anglican Episcopal Archdeacon of the Yukon … author and adventurer. Harper was tall among Athabascans … at six feet. He was soft-spoken and smiled easily. Stuck soon relied on him and would later say “…he was the best shot, the best dog driver, the best hand with any sort of boat … from a birch bark canoe to a power launch … the most resourceful and capable man I have known...
