Henry Nicholas Gunther died today, November 11, 1918.
While some people are known for “cheating death” … and living … in a cruel twist of fate, Henry Gunther actually “cheated life” … dying … needlessly on a field in France, in the final seconds of World War I.
Gunther hailed from the Highlandtown section of Baltimore … at the time he was drafted, employed at the National Bank there. And like many families of German descent … victims of intense anti-German sentiment in that war, maybe so much that it left Henry Gunther with something to prove.
He arrived in France, a U.S. Army staff sergeant and was miserable. A letter he wrote, encouraging a friend to NOT enlist was returned by censors to Gunther’s commander, who broke him to private. Gunther took it hard.
On the morning that ended the War to End All Wars … the Armistice was signed at five, and couriers dispatched with the news....
