PROGRAM NOTES
STRING TRIO IN G MAJOR, OPUS 9 # 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Beethoven arrived in Vienna from Bonn in 1792 to study with Haydn. At the same time he also studied with Albrechtsberger (Kappelmeister of St. Stephens) and Antonio Salieri. He also began to establish his reputation as a composer and pianist. By 1795 he was concluding his formal studies and had made his very successful debut as a pianist. His Opus 1 Piano Trios had been published and he was invited to compose dances for the Artists Ball. By December he had played his own piano concerto at one of the concerts welcoming Haydn back from London. Many Beethoven biographers consider that in the Opus 1 Piano Trios and the String Trio of Opus 8, together with the three String Trios of Opus 9, Beethoven was preparing for his eventual attention to string quartets.
