Plugging Into Nature - PART 5: SOLAR AND THE FUTURE

ROSS: RAYS OF SUNLIGHT SPILL INTO THE SALT LAKE VALLEY ONE MORNING AS KEVIN SHUMWAY STUDIES THE SMALL PHOTOVOLTAIC ARRAY OF BLACK SOLAR PANELS ON HIS ROOF.

KS: “We’re starting the sunny part of the year now. So during the day, from about now until 6 pm, this array is creating between 1 and 1/2 and 2 and 1/2 kilowatts.”

HAVING SEEN MOST OF THE ELECTRIC UTILITY’S SOURCES OF POWER, I CAME HERE TO FIND PERHAPS A SMALL SOURCE OF ELECTRONS NOT COMING FROM THE POWER COMPANY, BUT FROM SHUMWAY, MY NEIGHBOR.

KS: “Maybe… I’m not using 2 kilowatts constantly. I’d have to have three toasters plugged in all the time. But even then, some of it is going out into the grid and the Net Metering keeps track of that.
