PROGRAM NOTES
CELLO SONATA # 2 IN F MAJOR, OPUS 99 by Johannes Brahms (1833-1896)
The Sonata No. 2 in F minor, Op. 99, although written in the Composer’s sixth decade of life, is a work of leonine youth and power. It is certainly at the heart of the cello repertory, beloved by cellists and by audiences, alike.
Brahms liked to spend the summers in Switzerland at Lake Thun, and many of his mature chamber masterpieces were composed in that setting, including this cello sonata, the Violin Sonatas in A Major and D Minor, and the C Minor Piano Trio. The first performance of the F Major Sonata was given on November 24, 1886 in Vienna. The cellist was Robert Hausman, (1852-1909), the cellist of the Joachim Quartet and a great friend of Brahms. The pianist was the composer, himself.
