Piece Description

Folk-singing legend Judy Collins hosts an hour-long, holiday special, PEACE ON EARTH: A HOLIDAY FOLK TOUR with JUDY COLLINS. The program features musical takes on the holiday season from folk artists from across the country. The music includes many new originals -- some thoughtful, some whimsical - along with a few holiday favorites. Along the way, many of the artists reflect on the holidays and tell the stories behind their songs. The program is free to all public radio stations ? NPR affiliated or not. It is Newscast compatible. It includes one 60-second break opportunity midway through program. The performers include: Judy Collins ("Let It Snow" and "Song for Sarajevo"); Jeff Talmadge of Austin ("First Day of Winter"); from Woodstock, Leslie Ritter and Scott Petito ("The Bells of Christmas"); from New York City, Caddy Finlayson ("Silent Night"); from Berkley, CA, the Jewish Home Elders & Judith-Kate Friedman ("Chanukah Tonight"); from Massachusetts, Mark Erelli ("Ain't No Time of Year To Be Alone"), Pete Nelson ("You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch"),and Jim Henry ("The Tree"); New Hampshire's James Durst ("Holiday Invitation"); from Oregon, John Twist ("Scrooge in Black and White"); Salt Lake City's Kate MacLeod (Mc-Cloud) ("A Holiday Song"); Chuy Martinez from Albuquerque ("Ezequiel Codos"); and from Baton Rouge, Mary Gauthier (Go-Shay) ("Christmas in Paradise"). Both the original program and this sequel allow Judy Collins, one of the biggest names in folk music, to introduce listeners to some of the fine folk players who are, perhaps, less well-known to the country at large. All of the performers are veterans of the folk scene with strong local and regional followings and many have won awards for their singing and songwriting. The stories each one tells help create a holiday tapestry that encourages listeners to conjure up their own memories and feelings about this special time of year. The program is a follow-up to the successful NPR special "Do You Hear What I Hear: A Holiday Folk Tour with Judy Collins" that aired on more than 100 stations in 2000 and 2001. That special is also available at PRX (http://www.prx.org/pieces/6742) or you may contact the producer at paul@paulingles.com. The 2004 Special "A Holiday Music Tour With Judy Collins" is also available. (http://www.prx.org/pieces/20487)
