Series: Swan's Island Memory Project
From: Meghan Vigeant
Length: 00:02:47

Celebrate America's independence the Island way, with pranks, potato-spoon races, and pie eating. But remember, cheaters never prosper here. Read the full description.

Fourth_of_july_-_late_1950_s_small Mike Holmes’ father Bob Holmes grew up on Swan’s Island, Maine, loved it here and began to raise his family here. But the store he ran wasn’t doing well and he needed to feed his family.  So the Holmes family moved to the mainland where Bob found work. But there were still summers on the Island. And summers on Swan’s Island were filled with good fun for Mike. His story is about celebrating America’s Independence Day Swan’s Island style.

Michael Holmes (b. 1947) was interviewed by Myron “Sonny” Sprague and Meghan Vigeant on July 24, 2010. Mike now lives in South Portland, Maine.
