Transcript
The Portland Sentinel was a newspaper covering North and NE Portland. It started in 2001 and printed its last edition in March of 2010. I will remember it as one of the best neighborhood papers in the city. Early in my journalism career, the Sentinel gave me writing assignments that sent me on all kinds of adventures. They even let me edit and assign features for a DIY issue of the paper. When I heard that this little gem of a community newspaper was closing its doors, I felt bereft. And I wasn’t alone. Publisher Cornelius Swart organized a ritual for writers, editors and readers to say goodbye to The Sentinel and to burn extra copies of the paper he no longer had room to store.
