There’s a lot to be said for getting creative with existing rituals. But sometimes you just have to make up your own. That’s what Katie and Tajenae Perkins did when they chose each other as family. They weren’t getting married, though. As Katie says, they adopted each other. Tajenae was 10 years old at the time and Katie was in her mid-thirties. They first met when Katie decided to take in a foster child after working in the foster care system for years as a social worker.
Katie: I always knew that I would adopt a foster child from pretty early on in my work with foster kids, but I thought I would be married first. And so I never even really planned for it or gave it a thought and so something just moved in me and I became sure that I was ready and equipped to do it all of a sudden....conviction: She just came in and we really connected right away and it’s been wonderful.
